Financing the agri–energy nexus: Pathways to build India’s transition bond market

mcw_roundtable

Under the aegis of Mumbai Climate Week 2026, auctusESG, in partnership with NSE International Exchange (NSE IX), the Rabo Foundation, the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, and the Finance Industry Development Council (institutional partner), are hosting a high-level, closed-door roundtable titled Financing the agri–energy nexus: Pathways to build India’s transition bond market on 18th February. The roundtable aims to address one of the most consequential yet underfinanced segments of India’s real economy, where rising energy demand in agriculture intersects with increasing climate vulnerability and persistent structural constraints in financing.

India’s agricultural sector is facing growing exposure to erratic monsoons, heat stress and supply chain disruptions, while remaining highly energy intensive. The continued reliance on inefficient irrigation pumps, diesel-based machinery and fragmented energy access solutions exacerbate both emissions and operating costs. Despite the sector’s economic importance and its critical role in achieving India’s net-zero target by 2070, sustainable agriculture continues to receive a disproportionately small share of climate and transition finance. Financing gaps are most acute for farmers, agri MSMEs and decentralised energy users.

The roundtable seeks to bring together NBFCs, financial institutions, institutional investors, regulators and rating agencies to explore practical pathways for mobilising capital at scale for agri-energy assets. Discussions will focus on expanding NBFC participation in bond markets, addressing policy and regulatory barriers, and identifying viable approaches for structuring, de-risking and scaling sustainability and transition-linked instruments to support India’s agri-energy transition.
