SUSTAINABLE FINANCE & CLIMATE TRANSITION

Description: A multi-year program to integrate climate resilience and sustainability into India’s financial ecosystem, Phase II of GIFS, starting 2025, strategically scales up efforts to deliver measurable outcomes across institutional, gender, and enterprise levels. The initiative focuses on strengthening regulator and financial institution capacity, empowering women leaders in finance, and supporting MSMEs in adopting green practices through three workstreams: GIFS, GroW (Green Women in Finance), and the Technical Assistance Centre (TAC).
The overarching aim is to enable India’s low-carbon and resilient transition by building a sustainable financial system capable of financing climate-aligned growth. Key activities include diagnostics, capacity building, policy dialogue, and cross-learning to enhance institutional capabilities; advancing gender-responsive leadership and inclusive finance; and accelerating on-ground implementation through technical assistance, cluster interventions, and MSME capacity building to unlock green capital flows.

Description: Strengthen a leading Indian financial institution’s capacity to identify, classify, and finance climate adaptation projects. Developed an adaptation taxonomy, screened portfolio data to identify eligible activities and building internal capabilities through training on adaptation finance and credit integration. It also included mapping adaptation-specific funds and credit lines to enable access to concessional finance and mainstream adaptation lending within institutional frameworks.

Description: Delivered technical support to strengthen institutional capacity for adaptation-focussed lending in the banking sector. The assignment included the development of a structured screening tool combining sectoral and geographical data to identify adaptation-eligible investments. It also included an institutional capacity assessment to identify knowledge gaps and inform a roadmap for scaling adaptation investments through future credit lines. The outputs enhanced the institution’s ability to classify, appraise and monitor adaptation finance in alignment with international best practices.

Description: Developed an integrated approach to enable corporates to embed climate considerations in operations, supply chains, and financing. 3 core components were explored; (i) sectoral analysis and benchmarking of 5 hard-to-abate sectors and key suppliers; (ii) policy analysis and development of sector-specific climate transition recommendations; and (iii) design of a climate finance strategy, including innovative instruments and investor engagement pathways. The outcome strengthened corporate readiness, policy alignment, and access to transition finance.

Description: Prepared a sustainability strategy insert which is a part of the bank’s Sustainability Bond Framework.
Developed a sustainability strategy to support the development of a financial institution’s Sustainability Bond Framework. The work included review of existing disclosures and consultations with relevant departments to define sustainability priorities. The resulting strategy provided a clear structure for integrating environmental and social objectives into future bond issuances and lending operations.

Description: Initiative aimed at increasing awareness and build capacities of FIs and corporates in harnessing transition financing opportunities to fund transition plans, and to equip the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) with necessary support and information to introduce climate-related prudential regulation.
As part of the three-partner consortium, played a key role in an ongoing national-level initiative to strengthen financial sector capacity for managing climate risks and mobilising transition finance. Initiative included evaluation of Basel Principles for India’s supervisory framework and developing recommendations for the Reserve Bank of India on the application of Basel Principles, grounded in feedback gathered from financial sector stakeholders. Led the workstream responsible for delivering climate-transition training sessions for the Reserve Bank of India and financial institutions and supported capacity-building for high-emitting corporates to develop credible transition plans. Additionally, supported training high-emitting corporates on developing credible transition plans. The project contributed to policy dialogue through G20 and COP28-linked events to advance India’s transition agenda.

Description: Conducted multi-country assessments of green inclusive finance policy and regulatory frameworks, along with an inventory of green technologies and stakeholders across 5 South Asian economies.
The study evaluated policy readiness, financial inclusion linkages, and private sector participation in climate finance. Findings informed the design of a regional Technical Assistance Facility aimed at scaling private investment flows for adaptation and mitigation in vulnerable communities.

Description: Analysed the existing public and private initiatives related to climate financing in agriculture, agroforestry and ecosystem restoration (includes climate mitigation and adaptation) in India.
Executed a comprehensive scoping study analysing public and private climate finance initiatives across the agriculture, forestry, and ecosystem restoration sectors. The research applied mixed-method analysis combining literature review and stakeholder consultations to identify key financing trends, constraints, and opportunities. The outputs included a structured research framework, interview synthesis, and a publishable report outlining recommendations to accelerate capital mobilisation for nature-based sectors.

Description: Developed a comprehensive financing blueprint to catalyse private capital for sustainable agriculture interventions for an Indian state. Conducted detailed analysis of district-level challenges, estimation of capital requirements, and mapping of public and private funding flows. A blended finance facility and investment criteria were designed to support low-carbon interventions, with implementation plans and risk frameworks which were approved by the subnational government and actioned.

Description: Developed the blueprint for a gender-responsive climate finance facility designed to catalyse private investment in renewable energy and empower women- and youth-owned enterprises.
Designed the facility’s financial architecture, risk management and investment frameworks, and SDG-aligned financing instruments. It incorporated currency risk analysis, outreach strategy design, and stakeholder consultations to strengthen the facility’s operational, financial, and social impact foundations.

Description: Designed and developed a sustainable finance framework primarily to aid the issuance of green, social and sustainability bonds by the beneficiary financial institution.
Conducted a portfolio assessment, mapped activities against relevant SDGs and taxonomies, designed governance and reporting mechanisms in line with ICMA and Climate Bonds Initiative standards. Together, these deliverables enhanced the institution’s preparedness to tap sustainable debt markets and ensure alignment of its financing activities with global ESG expectations.

Description: A structured methodology that engaged systemically important banks and regulators in Fiji and Tonga to build institutional and individual capacity in solar financing within their banking sector. The intervention included solar project appraisal, structured finance, ESG risk management, and innovative financial instruments.

Description: Delivered a sector-wide comparative analysis of international sustainability reporting standards vis-à-vis India’s BRSR framework. Covering 21 sectors encompassing the full NIFTY 1000 market capitalisation, the work identified material disclosure gaps, assessed readiness for IFRS S1 and S2 adoption, and proposed enhancements to strengthen India’s corporate sustainability reporting landscape.

A detailed assessment of 90 listed entities and investor requirements informed recommendations for policy reform, improved reporting comparability, and enhanced access to sustainable capital.

Description: Raised low-cost sustainable finance capital by strengthening ESG and climate risks assessments, improve brand visibility and create an inclusive, impactful, sustainable business model.
Developed a comprehensive ESG and climate risk strategy for a leading agri-NBFC, aimed at raising capital by embedding sustainability across governance, operations, risk management and disclosures. This included a landscape assessment and benchmarking exercise, to devise a phased ESG/climate integration roadmap, and preparing disclosure guidance aligned with global standards such as TCFD, TNFD, BRSR, and IFRS S1/S2. The engagement covered preparing the institution for capital raise, capacity building for internal teams, strengthening the organisation’s sustainability communication approach, and developing the sustainability report to support transparency, resilience, and access to sustainable finance.

Description: The project involved the evaluation of current practices across governance, strategy, risk management, and disclosure. Benchmarking against peer institutions and global best practices enabled the development of a gap dashboard and a phased ESG roadmap outlining short-, medium-, and long-term actions for institutional alignment and capacity strengthening, readying the institution for capital raise from MDBs.

Description: Accelerated financial inclusion for women and indigenous groups in Chile through a landscape assessment of current banking practices and curation of a five-week training module for leading Chilean banks.
The project combined a landscape assessment of Chile’s financial inclusion ecosystem with focus group discussions across leading domestic banks to identify institutional and skill gaps. A multi-week intervention was then designed to enhance bankers’ understanding of ESG, inclusion, and sustainable finance, supporting equitable access to financial services.

Description: Identified and analysed the progress, developments, challenges and solutions to promote business and human rights practices in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
Conducted a regional diagnostic study to assess the state of business and human rights practices in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The project combined research on policy frameworks and international standards, including the UN Guiding Principles and UNDP 10+ Roadmap, with stakeholder consultations across industry, policy, and academia. The final report proposed mechanisms, including a regional working group, to advance implementation of human rights principles in corporate governance.

Description: Prepared a sustainable finance practitioner’s guide by engaging with the Indian financial sector stakeholders on sustainable palm oil, to accelerate financing towards sustainable palm oil.
The work combined research on climate and land-use risks with consultations involving key financial sector stakeholders to identify gaps and opportunities. The guide offered structured recommendations on governance, strategy, and disclosure mechanisms to advance sustainable finance practices in the sector.

Description: Undertook an extensive evaluation of non-financial disclosures to assess the readiness of Indian financial and non-financial institutions to adopt climate-related reporting aligned with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The study analysed the sustainability and climate-related practices using ESG and TCFD frameworks across industry, quantified qualitative data to benchmark performance, and identified disclosure gaps against global standards such as SASB and SFDR.

Description: Strengthened ESG and climate risk assessment and enable central bank supervision in the Indian financial sector through landscape assessment towards ESG and climate risk management, capacity building for 10 Indian financial institutions and policy options
Implemented a multi-institutional initiative to strengthen climate risk assessment and advance the greening of India’s financial sector. The engagement included a detailed landscape study of ESG and climate risk management practices across 10 of India’s largest public and private financial institutions, followed by development and delivery of an extensive capacity-building programme targeted towards credit and risk officers. The initiative also produced a policy options paper for the banking regulator, providing recommendations to integrate climate-related financial risks into supervisory and lending frameworks.

Description: Executed a 2-phase diagnostic and design study to identify strategic opportunities to mobilise and accelerate climate finance. The work involved developing nine policy and market interventions, validated through expert consultations and global benchmarking, and preparing detailed implementation plans for priority actions. The second phase advanced focused research on regulatory reforms and foreign exchange risk mitigation products to enable low-cost climate finance.

Description: Led an extensive research project to outline the landscape of bioeconomy financing in the SADC region, comprising of 16 countries mapping finance policies and regulations, public and private investment flows, and international best practices on financing the bioeconomy. Presented research findings to the G20 and final outcomes to the Government of South Africa to lead further work on a regional bioeconomy strategy.

The project analysed international best practices across priority sectors, relevant instrument types and translated these learnings into context-specific models for implementation. The outputs included a benchmarking report with key case studies, stakeholder workshop, and prototype design of green finance instruments to advance climate adaptation and mitigation goals in the sector.
